The GH4 was the hot camera for just about all You Tubers, including myself, in 2014 and into 2015 before Sony started to rule that space with their full frame line of cameras. Now we are in 2016 and panasonic has released the specs for the GH5, which will be released in mid 2017, here are some of the highlights
- 4K/30p, 25p, 24p, 23.98p video recording.
- 18 megapixel sensor
- 10 bit, which will up your colors in video from the millions we saw with the GH4's 8 bit to billions. This will give you a lot of flexibility when color grading/correcting
This now looks to be an incremental upgrade because the rumors of 6K video seems to be false Panasonic has now released that it will only be 6k photos which means absolutely nothing to us in the video community. I am still hoping the 10 bit color helps with the off skin tones we saw with the GH4. While I don't think this would sway me away from Sony because I believe the GH5 will still have a micro four thirds sensor and after using the super 35 on my A7R2 I can't imagine going back to that crop and poor low light. As for the pricing I think this will be around $1500 USD but Panasonic has not released any info on pricing at the time of this article.
Let me know your thoughts on the GH5 in the comments section, is this something you would look to pick up and if so what do you think the price should be?
*****Updated to reflect the new release from Panasonic stating the camera will not have 6k video capabilities but will only have 6k photo cabaplities
